Sinus Graft / Lift

Sinuses are hollow areas behind your cheeks, above your upper teeth. Some of your upper teeth roots pass into the maxillary sinuses, but when these teeth are removed there is only a very thin area of bone that separates the mouth from the sinus. In order for dental implants to be placed, more bone needs to be present for anchorage. This procedure has become increasingly popular over the last 15 years.

Our friendly dentists will assist you with a sinus graft or sinus augmentation so that you can have dental implants in your upper jaw, to replace missing teeth.

Our friendly dentists will assist you with a sinus graft or sinus augmentation so that you can have dental implants in your upper jaw, to replace missing teeth.

What Is A Sinus Graft?

Your dentist will work on your sinus, using the space left where the upper teeth used to be. He or she will lift the membrane and then insert the replacement bone into the sinus. After a few months have passed, this bone will integrate with your natural bone. The bone is then strong enough for your dental implants to be placed a few months afterwards.

Who Might Need A Sinus Graft

A sinus graft may be needed if

● You have lost teeth in your upper jaw, especially in your molars and you do not have enough bone for implant placement.
● You have lost teeth due to gum disease.
● You have lost bone because of lost teeth.
● The positioning of your sinus is too close to the jaw for your implants. This will depend on the size and shape of your teeth and sinuses, as well as your age as sinuses get bigger as we get older.

Where Does The Extra Bone Come From?

It is possible to take bone from another place in your body or from an external source, like a cow bone, or from a synthetic material.

What Can You Expect From A Sinus Lift Procedure?

The gum where your missing tooth used to be will be lifted to expose the bone underneath. Then a small opening will be made in your bone. The separating membrane between your sinus and jaw will be pushed away.
Then, small grains of bone graft material are placed into the space where the sinus used to be. Once the space has been filled with all the bone, the opening will be sealed with stitches.

It can take a few months for the bone to be fused with your original jaw. Once this process has been completed, your dentist will be able to place your implants.

Post procedure it is very important you follow your dentist’s care advice to avoid infection, and attend all your follow up appointments. The site might be sore and swollen and you may experience some bleeding. Do not blow your nose and be sure to use any medication or nose sprays you dentist prescribes. He or she may recommend saline spray to reduce swelling and nasal congestion.
