What Types Of Mouth Guards Are Available?

There are three broad groups of mouth guards on offer.

A standard guard is a set size that you would purchase off the shelf. You would not be able to modify or change it.

A bite and fit mouth guard is warmed up to be made malleable so that when you bite it, it takes the shape of your mouth. These are more comfortable than standard mouth guards but probably won’t be able to accommodate any braces.

Custom mouth guards are crafted by your dentist and created to fit the unique size and shape of your child’s mouth. A good fit has a better chance of minimising risk of injury than something that does not fit properly. Your dentist will create a cast of your child’s mouth and then create the mouth guard around this so that it fits correctly.

Interestingly enough, it is actually possible to wear a mouth guard with braces or orthodontic appliances, however your dentist would need to custom-make something for your child.
