So many people have anxiety about visiting the dentist and in many cases it is because children did not have preventive dentistry, they only consulted their dentist when they had a painful problem. At Serenity Smiles Dental we focus on helping our young patients to relax so that we can educate them and help their teeth to last a lifetime. We maintain a positive attitude so that children have a positive experience at the dentist.
How Often Should Children Have Check Ups?
It is highly recommended that all children visit the dentist at least twice a year to check for signs of problems. Regular check ups and a good relationship with a friendly dentist is important to give your child a good start with oral health. Regular visits also ensure that any problems are detected early on, and can be treated before they spread.
What Can You Expect From A Check Up?
The Dental Exam
During the dental exam your dentist will inspect your child’s teeth and gums and the mouth for signs of decay. The dentist will also check the soft tissue of the mouth. He or she will check the jaw and bite for signs of grinding.
Depending on your child’s age, it may be necessary to take an x-ray to check the positioning of the baby or adult teeth.
Your dentist may apply some fluoride or sealant to protect your child’s teeth against decay. This typically is done on the molars and back teeth, which children may struggle to brush properly.
Your dentist will do a professional cleaning to remove any plaque and tartar build up on the teeth. He or she will run through good brushing and flossing techniques and chat to your child about the importance of following a healthy diet. This is important for younger children, because there will be areas that are hard to reach, and which will need professional cleaning.
He or she may use disclosing tablets to stain areas of the teeth that your child is not getting to when he or she brushes. This can help you to guide your child when brushing.
If your child does have cavities the dentist will fill them up.
What Is A Dental X-Ray For?
A dental x-ray allows the dentist to check different parts of your child’s mouth, the areas that were not visible during the exam. Using the x-ray he can inspect whether there will be enough space in the jaw to accommodate the adult teeth, and be able to see whether the teeth are going to emerge straight.
